Eco Council

Meet our new Eco Councillors for this year!

Wheelie Big Challenge!

This year our Eco Council are taking part in the Wheelie Big Challenge in an effort to reduce waste and promote recycling in our school. This involved taking part in a workshop in which we learnt more about reducing waste and how we can reuse and recycle different materials. We also carried out a waste audit by sorting through the rubbish in our bins and weighing the amount of food waste, recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste. We will continue to monitor the waste in our bins throughout the year and ensure our pupils our putting rubbish into the correct bins and recycling where possible.

Waste Free Wednesdays!

On ‘Wear Green Be Green’ Day our Eco Council led an assembly to explain our ‘Waste free Wednesdays’ initiative to the whole school. They did a brilliant job explaining the importance of reducing waste and recycling and reusing things where possible. They shared lots of good ideas and tips for packing a waste free lunch including using reusable containers and water bottles and avoiding single use plastic items. They will continue to monitor the amount of rubbish in our bins this term to measure the impact of our ‘Waste Free Wednesdays’ initiative.

Weighing rubbish!

The Eco Councillors did a wonderful job of leading assembly, informing all pupils and staff about our upcoming Eco initiatives this year.

Our Eco Code

The Eco councillors have been carrying out 'spot checks' on classroom bins - weighing how much rubbish is in our general waste bins!

Assembly

The Eco council recently led a school assembly to ensure all pupils and staff know exactly what rubbish goes in which bin and to encourage everyone to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! They also shared information that they learnt during the visit from NI water and handed out a brand new reusable water bottle to every pupil!
Check out this video which introduced their assembly:

Pupils were very excited to recieve their new resuable water bottles! Thank you NI Water!

We are now recycling crisp packets and used pens throguh Terracycle - all helping us to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill.
