Thinking Matters
We are committed to developing pupils who are confident, independent thinkers. That’s why we have joined the Thinking Matters programme, a whole‑school approach that helps children build the cognitive and metacognitive skills they need to thrive in learning and in life.
We chose to take part in the Thinking Matters programme because it:
- Strengthens learning skills: Children learn to think more deeply, ask better questions and organise their ideas effectively.
- Builds independence and resilience: Thinking tools help pupils become more self‑regulated and reflective learners.
- Supports all learners: The approach benefits pupils of all abilities—including those who need extra support—by giving them strategies to understand and manage their learning.
- Promotes positive wellbeing: Thinking Schools places importance on positive learning behaviours and a supportive, considerate school culture.
What Is a Thinking School?
A Thinking School is a learning community where staff and pupils work together to develop reflective, critical and creative thinking. It encourages children to understand how they learn, not just what they learn.
Research shows that when children are taught how to use thinking strategies—such as planning, questioning, reflecting and evaluating—they make stronger academic progress and become more confident problem-solvers.
What This Means for Your Child
Your child will have the opportunity to:
-
Use practical thinking tools that make learning clearer and more engaging
-
Gain strategies to solve problems, plan tasks and reflect on progress
-
Build confidence, independence and resilience
-
Learn in classrooms where thinking is valued, discussed and celebrated
- Experience a supportive environment focused on wellbeing and positive learning habits
These are skills that go beyond school—supporting children in everyday decision‑making, friendships, and future learning.
